HERITAGE
The Irish Rugby football union (IRFU) was formed in 1874. The IRFU was one of the founding members of the IRB (International Rugby Board) along with Wales and Scotland (England refused to join until 1890) Ireland lost their first international test match against England 7-0 at the Oval on 15 February 1875. Interestingly, both teams fielded 20 players in this match. It was not until 1881 that they first won a test, against Scotland at Ormeau in Belfast.rnrnIn 1884 Ireland travelled to Cardiff to play wales, unfortunately Ireland had 2 players missing and had to ask the Wales Rugby team to borrow a couple of theirs!! The Irish Rugby union team used to play their international home matches at Lansdowne Road in Dublin. However this was closed in 2007, making way for the new international stadium in 2010 the Aviva Stadium. The Irish Rugby union team is unique in a sense that it selects players for the Ireland Rugby team from two separate political national territories the republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. When the country was separated, the IRFU decided to continue with the 4 original provinces, even though 1 of them was now not part of Ireland, but belonged to Northern Ireland.
